All automatic for a dog, yet so rare in humans. Here is why:
- We are humbled coming into the world, small, weak, helpless, at the mercy of our surroundings.
- As we grow, we develop more and more influence over our surroundings ( something a dog cannot do)
- As our power grows, it expands faster than our maturity, faster than our humility. We are proud of the power that we have from of our parents hard work, and the gift of being human and alive.
- When we are young we think we know so much more than our parents, they are so old, and fussy and outdated.
- We are modern, young, quick, unencumbered – what a bummer to be them.
- Then something does not work out as we planned, and the first chink appears in our armor, perhaps we are not completely perfect.
- We dust ourselves off, get back up, and go back to work, beginning to establish what a dog is born with, consistency and character, singleness of purpose.
- We get to feeling really good again, get a little cocky..then: BLAM, something really bad, irreparable happens: now we are angry and depressed.
- Then we are inspired by someone who has done more with less, and we get up again, and get back to work, humbled now that we are obviously not perfect nor better than anybody else.
- The next challenge, we are ready: with confidence, and character, and a knowledge that we can face the future.

My top salesperson at the time, Steve Morris, who had left Realtor.com and come to work with me, said:

The course of the next few years would change my life. The owner of a giant Vista-print Printing in Portland (I was living in Eugene, Oregon at the time) Steve, wanted to expand from printing mainly real estate printing to doing all forms of online printing and we told him what to do and helped him rank line one number one for online printing – probably long since retired. RISMedia.com’s John Feathers ton and Darryl McPherson became my clients for years -we moved RISMedia.com into WordPress – look at them copying me with their new “content producers network” LOL – some things never change- and we did over 4 million dollars in business with Realtors and we attended many leadership conferences, CEO summits and Power Broker dinners in those years, as many of you know.
In retro-spec, it amazes me how much has changed, and, in some ways, that I am still standing after it all!
How many jobs have moved overseas? How many good American companies have gone public, then subsequently sold out to foreign interests, exporting the jobs.
Steve had two of these gigantic presses that printed and shipped without humans when I met him.
